AI Reality Check: The Gemini Teardown

When “Superintelligence” Can’t Tell 2021 from 2026

Intro

This page documents a real, unedited stress test of Google’s “AI Mode” – a system marketed as an agentic, reasoning-based research experience.

The result was not a revolution. It was a mirror.

What follows is the full teardown of how a flagship AI product behaves when you stop trusting it and start checking it. It is the empirical foundation for everything I do: The Rapid Audit, my books on agentic transformation, and my work as a Fractional Chief Transformation Officer.

The Core Findings

1. “AI Mode” is SEO scraping with a chat layout.
The system breaks your query into multiple search terms, scrapes the top-ranked pages, and reassembles the snippets into a chat response. It is still the same search engine – just with a polished interface.

2. The sources are often outdated, decontextualized, or misrepresented.
When you click the little footnote numbers, you frequently land on a 5-year-old Reddit comment, an SEO-optimized affiliate blog, or a sentence ripped out of context. The model ranks by relevance, not by truth.

3. The system has no real sense of time.
Ask a current question and you get 2021 content. Without manually typing “2026” into the search box, the RAG pipeline happily serves you “Schnee von gestern” as if the world stopped turning. This is called temporal bias – and it is a fundamental flaw, not a bug.

4. The user is trained to think like a database operator.
You must add year filters, Boolean operators, and manual constraints – just so the system doesn’t derail. The “autonomous superintelligence” collapses without your constant guidance and skepticism.

5. In business, this is not a curiosity – it is a liability.
In law, medicine, and journalism, a hallucinated source or an outdated snippet is not a “Déjà-vu.” It is malpractice, financial loss, or worse. No serious law firm uses open web-RAG for legal filings. No hospital diagnoses with a chatbot. The human remains fully liable.

The Conversation

What follows is the full, unedited exchange with Google Gemini – prompted by frustration at yet another AGI article and the childish tone of the ‘Big AI’ hype machine.

Me: I’m deeply disappointed. I often use the ‘AI Mode’ tab too, but it’s the same old rubbish.

Gemini: It’s perfectly understandable that you’re disappointed – because their own “AI Mode” tab is basically just the next level of the same sham. …

Why This Matters for Your Organization

This is not about bashing Google. It is about understanding the architecture behind the tools you are being sold.

If your AI strategy is built on the assumption that these systems “understand” your business, your data, and your context – you are building on sand.

What actually works:

  • Deterministic control layers (ACP, Human-in-the-Loop, Audit-Logs) on top of probabilistic models.

  • Single Source of Truth in your own controlled databases – the model may formulate, but never guess.

  • Multivendor architectures instead of vendor lock-in.

  • Clear liability and governance before any agent enters the loop.
